condition (record/cover): EX / EX+ (cut out) With original innersleeve. The 1988 comeback album after Pere Ubu's mid-80s hiatus and lineup changes. David Thomas reconvened the band with a noticeably more accessible sound - not commercial by any stretch, but less aggressively experimental than their legendary 70s work. The songs have clearer structures and more conventional arrangements while still maintaining the band's distinctive atmospheric darkness. Without Allen Ravenstine's synthesizer, the sound is necessarily more guitar-focused, but remains recognizably Pere Ubu through Thomas's vocals and the band's refusal of rock orthodoxy. The lyrics remain oblique, poetic, and emotionally complex. A successful reinvention that proved the band's vision could evolve beyond their initial experimental phase.
