"After replying sceptically to newspaper reports that strange looking corpses found in the aftermath of floods in Vermont were those of alien beings, Albert N. Wilmarth, a professor at Miskatonic University, is contacted by Henry Wentworth Akeley, a Vermont native, who not only tells him that the corpses are those of alien creatures, but he can offer proof. Intrigued but still sceptical, Wilmarth and Akeley begin to correspond and Akeley attempts to send Wilmarth some of the evidence he has collected. Some, like a wax cylinder recording of the creatures buzzing inhuman speech and a cast of a footprint seemingly made by the claw of a giant insect, arrive; but others do not, leading Akeley to suspect that the creatures and their human agents want to stop him from telling others of their existence.

Akeley’s letters become more and more alarming, claiming that the creatures keep trying to lay siege to his farmhouse at night. Wilmarth begins to fear for his new found friend’s safety. Then Akeley’s tone abruptly changes. He says that the creatures have revealed themselves to be peaceful and have shared with him a great deal of knowledge about the universe and invites Wilmarth to Vermont in order to share this new found information and judge for himself the intentions of the creatures. Wilmarth agrees but arrives to find Akeley poorly, sitting in a chair in a darkened room with only his face and hands visible under rugs and blankets and speaking in an odd buzzing whisper. Fascinated but alarmed by Akeley’s tales of the creatures and their promise to allow him to travel with them to their outpost near Pluto, Wilmarth goes to bed but hears strange voices in the night. Scared, he goes to investigate.

He finds all trace of Akeley and the creatures’ human agents gone, but finds the pile of rugs on the now empty chair together with what he hopes are simply plaster casts of Akeley’s face and hands before escaping in Akeley’s car.
