Travelon Gamelon: Music For Bicycles
2024 stock. This early (1982) project from Arizona “Audio Artist” Richard Lerman presents musical composition performed with bicycles. Lerman explains: “A gamelan orchestra is a large group of percussive instruments, usually metallic, from SE Asia. In fact, the sound of such a group is not unlike the timbre of amplified bicycles.” With such an idea, he embarks on a project that captures the amplified sounds of moving bicycles in harmonious rhythms creating songs. Liner notes include detailed inf…

The Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer
2024 stock. Jon Appleton, Sydney Alonso, and Cameron Jones set out to create a new digital synthesizer at Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering in 1972. They considered the computer-controlled synthesizer superior to analog because of its “ability to create, by digital means alone, time-variant timbres which make all natural sounds interesting to our ears.” This 1976 recording presents the results of their effort—four different compositions, one each by Jon Appleton, Lars-Gunnar Bodin…

Skalpafloi
The last album from the master in the building-up of mystery, probably the most eerie piece he ever created. One of those albums that one can be dragged into as if there were really other worlds of that obscure nature and we could enter them for a while. You might even feel you don’t want to come back to safety and normality after being there…But who is really Werkbund? One might think Asmus Tietchens in disguise, but he's vehemently denied so.

No Blues (The Complete Hopbine '65)
“He said ‘who the fuck are you?” so I said, “I’m the bass player”. And all he said was “Well, we’ll see about that, won’t we?” When Tubby Hayes arrived at the Hopbine, Wembley’s popular jazz pub, one evening in the spring of 1965, his career was in a state of flux; still topping polls and casting an impressive shadow over the British jazz scene, he nevertheless remained frustrated. The elongated free-flights of John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins now held his fascination and although actively search…

Delusion Of The Fury
“It was only with Partch that a music began to take shape that could do equal justice to the physical desire for rhythmic pulse and a curiosity for new, unheard sounds; a music that enthralls us despite, or rather, precisely because of its unfamiliarity. A music for which we have no category, and which has no location, and yet in a strange way is grounded.” – Heiner Goebbels The American composer Harry Partch (1901-1974) is considered a pioneer of the Just Intonation movement and was far ahead o…

Silence Beyond Time
*2024 stock* “Between stood and still stands for the simultaneity of things that are really mutually exclusive” (Peter Michael Hamel, 2005). “Originally we wanted to call the project B.A.C.H.,” Peter Michael Hamel re-calls, when, in 1970, they were looking for the most unusual name possible for a extremely unusual formation. “Naturally we chose in it in part in allusion to the immortal baroque composer of that name, but above all the letters stood for “Between All Chairs.” That’s exactly how we …

Anagrama
BACK IN PRINT ON VINYL!  While 1995's Washing Machine LP moniker was a thinly-veiled jab at the corporate aesthetic ("no, you cannot turn Sonic Youth into a household appliance brand", the band even considered changing its name to Washing Machine but settled on the album title instead), their major label relationship was indeed a curious buzzpoint of talk on the street after their intake to DGC in 1990. It wouldn't be fair to say that this state of existence propelled the band to reinforce its i…
