Ahmed

Ahmed (أحمد) is a quartet of pianist Pat Thomas, alto saxophonist Seymour Wright, double bassist Joel Grip and drummer Antonin Gerbal. The group takes the music of the New York bassist, oud player and composer Ahmed Abdul-Malik (1927-1993) and reworks it live, in long sets built on his records and on the fragmentary plans he left behind. Abdul-Malik mixed jazz with Middle Eastern and North African music on albums such as Jazz Sahara (Riverside, 1958) and East Meets West (RCA Victor).
