Coppice

Since its foundation in 2009, Chicago-based Noé Cuéllar & Joseph Kramer have departed from bellows and electronics to create original compositions, installations, discography, arrangements for performance, and sculptural objects. Drawing from their expanding glossary of study, the duo is currently focused on live repertoire with custom instruments, prepared pump organ, and  electronic processes.

Bypass Ideal
*2024 stock. 100 copies limited edition*  "Bypass (2013) called for a heavily amplified live duo performance of modified boombox and prepared pump organ against a focal verging image. It's one of Coppice's first compositions to exclude signal processing. Instead, each part changes progressively while developing independently. We've recorded and isolated each part and placed them on opposing sides of a tape to further evade the intended mode of listening of the piece as a duo performance. Instead…
Draw Agreement
*200 copies limted edition.* A spatiotemporal synthesis of Coppice’s auditory and musical experiments (2009-2022) with custom, prepared, and modified musical instruments. This 3CD set abridges Coppice’s first three studies, artificially inserts them into the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, WI, and binaurally captures their diffusion across Elastic’s CLEAT (Chicago Laboratory for Electroacoustic Theatre), a 16-channel 96-speaker sound system. A nesting time capsule that cyclesFolded time and …
Surreal Air Fortress
For a while it was possible to describe the duo Coppice’s often indescribable music simply by identifying their many instruments, particularly the harmonium and accordion wielded by Joseph Kramer and Noé Cuéllar. But the notion of renewal is built right into their name: the word “coppice” refers to the practice of pruning a tree to promote new growth. The label press release says everything "Outside: light-filters-to-be-entered are Surreal Air Fortress. New  songs from Coppice for physical model…
Matches
Matches is 'a story with many holes' for lovers of music and sound. The album formed from various collaborative processes between 2009-2015. It's made up of various compositional structures (studio, live, and a mixture of both), it was recorded in various locations (in and out of Chicago in both home and studio settings), with many instruments and objects related to bellows and electronics (prepared shruti boxes, prepared pump organ, and tape processes), as well as new technologies and signal p…
Cores / Eruct
"In Coppice we create a nexus of integrated forms connected by our primary focus on sound, audio, and music. Cores/Eruct is an album about «what is kept in.» The five tracks are compositions dated between 2009-2012.In them we’ve intertwined instrumental interaction with electromagnetic interference through structuralist constraints to form complex timbral horizons that engorge, tip and hemorrhage. The instruments heard are prepared pump organ (Kinder), shruti box, funnels, tape processors…
Big Wad Excisions
Restocked!!Coppice, the Chicago-based duo of Joseph Kramer and Noé Cuéllar, have released a small but beautifully formed body of work showcasing unique instrumentation (bellows and electronics) and compositional practice. Big Wad Excisions builds on earlier experiments while tightening the focus and introducing new, unexpected elements. It also re-launches the newly-resuscitated Tim Barnes's Quakebasket label, which after lying dormant for six years and relocating to Louisville, KY, is enterin…
the pleasance & the purchase
Coppice (Noé Cuéllar & Joseph Kramer) is a Chicago-based duet of bellows and electronics.  Since its formation in 2009 they have produced original compositions for stage, fixed media, and performed installation settings, with a focus on adhering textural attenuation, processed gradation, the contours of instrumentation, and their multiple aspect highlights.Their variable instrumentation departs from bellows and reed instruments (accordion, pump organ, shruti box, harmonica), custom electronics (…
