Nessuno
“In 2011 Pauline Oliveros, Roscoe Mitchell, John Tilbury and Wadada Leo Smith opened the AngelicA Festival with 3 days of concerts… they performed solos and duets (Pauline and Roscoe; John and Wadada), and finally, for the first time ever, these 4 distinct musical voices performed together, as a quartet…Over time AngelicA (which is 26 years old) has always tried to bring together different worlds, even ones that were very far apart from each other (although distance is nothing but an illusion if…
Duets
**2019 stock** "This December 1976 recording features two of the most prominent AACM musicians, Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton. Mitchell’s compositions run the gamut, beginning with the darkly gorgeous opener that features Braxton’s contrabass clarinet nestling evocatively beneath the composer’s earthy flute… Mitchell’s other pieces investigate the sparer, more abstract realm, as the duo’s wide variety of reeds populate the sonic environment with scattered moans, squeaks and pops. Overall, …

Improvisations
Dedicated to the memory of Tony Marsh. The recordings on this double LP are taken from the first night of Roscoe Mitchell's inaugural two day residency at Cafe OTO in 2012 and his first time playing with drummer Tony Marsh and double bassist John Edwards. It was one of those nights where the music electrifies the room. Everyone on edge. Everything alive with the possibilities. Although there was much talk after the concert of the group playing together again this would sadly be the first and la…
Three compositions
Despite the compositions’ respective demands, Nicole Mitchell and Black Earth Ensemble fully and vividly represented Roscoe Mitchell’s varied means of creating chemistry between written and improvised materials. At every turn in the program, they played with a palpable sense of familiarity and ease with the composer’s vernacular and methods. They sounded like they’ve been playing this music every night for a long time. Bill Shoemaker, excerpt from the liner notes
