From the 1950s, Masaaki Takano (1927-2007) worked as a freelance "sound planner," mainly creating sound effects for stage productions. In the mid-1980s he began performances called "Sound Play" where he would perform on his own self-created sound instruments and his collection of ethnic instruments. Growing out of his work with sound effects, he became obsessed with the recording of natural sounds from the 1970s onwards, and this album "Shizukutachi" is a record of a high-quality recording of wa…
“Born in Tokyo in 1971, this artist, composer and performer has been living in Germany for some years, mainly in Dusseldorf, where she studied at the prestigious Kunstakademie, and in Cologne, where she first seriously started working with sounds (small sounds, as she calls them). Lastly, she has accentuated the more visual aspects of her research, which by now is characterized by the use of diverse – yet complementary – “media” such as sound itself, drawing, the written word, silence... Yui tur…

** Edition of 300 ** Everest Magma’s career over the past 10 years has been slowly building one of the most ecstatic and singular paths of the Italian underground scene. His dense and beautiful three albums were not afraid to cross boundaries with a mix of hypnotic tape beats, digital wonk, psych folk tropicalia and kinetic dub. This new offering 'Alto//Piano' once again sees him in uncharted territories, where nature is sublimated into a personal alien vision mixing acid-folk fingerpicking, ton…
The Collective Orchestra was a visionary, short-living creative music collective led by Gaetano Liguori, who was one of the main protagonists of Italian free jazz since the early 70s. It was an important attempt to put together young musicians from the two main towns in Italy, and its respective leading figures: Giorgio Gaslini in Milan and Mario Schiano in Rome. Previous attempts to set up anything similar were, in fact, either frustrated by rivalries between the various personalities or …
The set of The Weather Pieces are reflections on the perception of meteorological phenomena. The listener is immersed in a hybrid sound world, as the line between the live performer and the computer generated propositions becomes blurred. The musician follows a score that leaves room for interaction with the computer’s ever-changing proposals. The works also use the performer’s voice, using spoken texts to convey inner thoughts and feelings. Les si doux redoux for basset horn grew out of an…

2024 stock. The artistic career of Christopher Knowles (born 1959) began at the age of 13, when his writings and recordings came to the notice of avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson. Still a teenager, Knowles went on to write the libretto for Wilson and Philip Glass’ opera Einstein on the Beach, and his collaborations with Wilson would continue for decades. His practice spans many mediums—text, sound, painting, sculpture and performance—and exhibits a fascination with the materiality of l…

Released in 1975, this second full-length stands as perhaps the most uncompromising statement in the Heldon catalog - a work that refuses all concessions to accessibility while remaining utterly compelling from first pulse to final fade. * Clear vinyl edition. Edition of 500 * Cindytalk is the mercurial, expressionist outlet of Scottish artist Cinder. An evolution of her early 1980s Edinburgh-based punk band The Freeze, she launched the project upon moving to London, inspired by the crossroads of exploratory UK post-punk and early European industrial. Her work thrives on chance and transformation, collaging elements of noise, balladry, soundtrack, catharsis, and improvisation. After a series of celebrated albums for the Midnigh…
From its earliest utterances, experimental music has been particularly disposed to transnational and cross-cultural collaboration. Seeking the answer for a fundamental problem - how to transcend the boundaries of difference, distance, and time - it presents a means to find common ground and communicate through the elemental form of sound. Over the last 5 years, this precisely what the duo of Félicia Atkinson & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma has achieved, intertwining sublime sonorities across the geographi…
For Jack was written in 2024 for pianist Jack Yarbrough. I was inspired by Jack’s many performances of my music; how he approaches my soundworld with a beauty of touch and an attention to pacing. This piece is approximately 50 minutes long and, with a few exceptions, it is extremely quiet and spacious. Many thanks to Jack for asking me to write this piece and for playing it so beautifully.
Jack Yarbrough is a pianist working in the fields of contemporary and experimental music. Largely devoted t…
