Joe McPhee, born in Miami in 1939 and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York, is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser and theorist who has been playing tenor and soprano saxophone, pocket trumpet and valve trombone for more than fifty years. Nation Time (1971) and his other early self-released albums so impressed the Swiss listener Werner Uehlinger that he founded the hat Hut label in 1974 to put them out. He has led Trio X and Survival Unit III, has been a regular partner of The Thing, and has worked with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Raymond Boni, Trespass Trio and Universal Indians among many others.
