Three live performances of collaborative electroacoustic compositions from 2007-08, recorded in London, Brisbane and Antwerp, each exploring different points of contact between precomposed structures and spontaneous invention: a duo adrift  (in memory of Paul Rutherford) with pianist Sarah Nicolls, a nonet codex IX (in memory of Mauricio Kagel) with the ELISION ensemble, and a 17-piece group with Ensemble Champ d'Action realising codex VII (to Vinko Globokar).

Two new releases by Jonas Kocher’s Flexion label, and those releases can be had for the exchange of money, other CDs, books, bottle of wine, postcards etc. The first of these is not by Kocher himself but by two friends, the duo of one Hans Koch on bass clarinet and Gaudenz Badrutt on electronics – whatever that may consist of these days (laptop, stomp boxes, synths, electrical connections) cooking up some radical improvised music. Not radical in the sense of things being very loud or very soft, …

Death Is Unity With God finds Dominick Fernow returning to the kind of feral, burned-out productions that dominated 2012's Ornamented Walls(LOVE 080LP). Nodding to classic Muslimgauze, but also inspired by the parallels between religious fundamentalism at home in the USA and abroad, the oppressive atmospheres and destroyed rhythms isolate the gutted toil and drone in "It's to Come," while "FBI God" reduces the drums to scorched blasts against some harrowing, darkside chords. The quasi-speed torm…

After working with Cabaret Voltaire and The Hafler Trio, Watson became a sound recordist for the UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He has since joined a film and video production company, working for BBC wildlife documentaries and occasional feature films. It is with this naturalist spirit and background that Watson applies his work, capturing sound footage that illustrates a deep understanding of silence, space, and ecological wonderment. Weather Report understands that the weathe…

** restocked ** Gancio Cielo is the first full length of Francesco Cavaliere, an artist we had the pleasure to introduce to the public some years ago with a legendary tape called “Neverending Somersault”. After years of live performing and an intense studio work, Francesco developed a unique style using his voice as main source of sounds and an incredible archive of home made sound FX. Gancio Cielo is a magical space standing on its own, where a fantastic night-time story combined with exo…

"My second complete Sufi word -- or cycle -- consists of five contrasting letters -- or movements -- calling for various combinations of soloists [2, 3, 4, 5], instrumental ensemble [1, 3, 5], and real-time electronics [2, 4, 5]. It confidently extends a global poetic design made of a quest for meaning, a taste for extraordinary adventures, an interest in the perfume of mystical ecstasy, and the pleasure of carefully sculpting the time and shapes that make up writing." Jean-Luc Fafchamps i…

Outstanding, unreleased before fundamental electronic In 1954, Henri Pousseur was twenty-five when he composed his first piece of electronic music in the studios of the Cologne radio, where Stockhausen (with whom he had a close relationship) had created most of his famous pieces. Released in our Early Electronic series This seventh and penultimate installment in the series Henri Pousseur had programmed around his experimental and electronic music features his earliest works -his first steps. Hen…

At the nexus of Afrofuturism, science fiction, transcendental free jazz, and future hip hop, this new work from Eric Douglas Porter casts itself and its creator in a liminal zone most recognizably charted by astral traveler Sun Ra. Circuitous follows nearly a decade of releases for Deepblak -- the Oakland-rooted imprint of frequent collaborator Aybee -- and shares common blood with both the elevated consciousness of late '80s club culture and contemporary west coast beat scene. Built around Po…

**Historically important pieces documenting John Cage's early electronic and tape practice** "Although John Cage occasionally worked in large, sophisticated studios - for example, when he composed Fontana Mix in 1958 - his approach to electronic and tape music was often uncomplicated, makeshift, and pragmatic, employing simple tabletop devices: tape machines, phonograph cartridges, contact microphones, record players, portable radios, etc. He developed a soundworld that was utterly new, r…

The SalMar Construction is an amazing large music synthesis engine conceived and constructed in the early 1970's by a composer for use by a composer. These unreleased recordings were made at IRCAM in Paris in 1983. It illustrates the power that an electronic composition can achieve when the composer arrives at a true synergy with his synthesizer. This LP represents a significant performance by Salvatore Martirano (1927-1995) on his unique instrument, the SalMar Construction. Under developm…

Outstanding reissue, part of Sub Rosa's Early Electronics series. During the 1950s and 1960s, Roberto Gerhard gathered a significant magnetic tape collection in his home studio, creating a major repository of early electronic sound recordings of his own works. The pieces on this record present a complex set of challenges for audio restoration, requiring a complete understanding of his compositional process and allowing the spirit and vitality of his electronic work to speak clearly to the l…

Another installment in Sub Rosa's Early Electronic series: selected works, including previously unreleased material, recorded between 1978 and 1980 by a key composer of Belgian electronic music. André Stordeur was born 1941. His musical career started in 1973 with a tape composition for the soundtrack to Gordon Matta-Clark's film Office Baroque. Later in the 1970s, he participated in avant-garde music ensemble Studio voor Experimentele Muziek, founded in Antwerp, Flanders, by Joris de Laet. S…

2016 repress. Gatefold exact repro reissue of Don Cherry's classic Eternal Rhythm Group, recorded at the Berlin Jazz Festival, 1968. I wanted to share Hank with a world that was unfamiliar with him and unable to grasp the despair, hurt and loneliness that he lived, unable to absorb the words or the sentiment, unable to hear the words, “Like a piece of driftwood on the sea, may you never be alone like me”. I asked Derek Rush if he would be interested in doing Hank Williams songs with me, he put them in a minor key and arranged them while I re-interpreted the melody and sang the words of Hank Williams, adding my g…

Opening a sonic space that leads into delicate subconscious spheres, Ivan Pavlov aka CoH has created his most sophisticated work to date. MUSIC VOL. is a piece of gentle acoustic excitement. Evolving around concepts of silence and sound, each track reveals to the listener a different emotional chamber. The work generates a profound intimacy derived from the fact that "VOL." is meant literally; Pavlov places variations of volume and soft progressions of sound at the fore, inviting comparisons…

'Neurochemie' is one of the most intriguing albums we've found on France's excellent Rotorelief label. It counts as part of ongoing research by Siegmar Fricke, a long-standing fixture of the European tape music scene who has collaborated with the likes of Maurizio Bianchi and Giancarlo Toniutti since 1985 (Siegmar Fricke started in 1981 making musique-concrete-experiments with magnetophones and shortwave-radio signals, recorded on various cassettes, followed by intense activities in th…

Limited LP edition  'Ethnicities is an electro-acoustical scope of unreleased recordings of PACIFIC 231's post-industrial period. Successive and consecutive cuts were made until he put together the concept of the album as: pluri-cultural diversity of the sounds, tropical steams, exotic journeys & electronic man-made build-up manipulations, urban dins and industrial mazes, ' Ethnicities ' is a psychedelic and unexpected patchwork from PACIFIC 231.

Le Syndicat started its activity in Paris in 1982 and was founded by art students Ruelgo and Van Minh Lê. The goal of this association was to make extreme live noise performances. A year later, Le Syndicat tape label was created with help from Zorïn, painter, graphic designer and visual scientist. Their fascination for chaos, strength and violence was not motivated by provocation but by the sheer pleasure to manipulate noise material. That was the main difference between industrial…
