The 'European Jazz Sounds' series, that started around 1960 with legendary albums by the Michael Naura Quintet, Tubby Hayes and Max Greger, sees a welcome revival! This first volume presents the early recordings of the renowned Joki Freund Quintet from the late 1950s. German saxophonist and arranger Joki Freund played with Jutta Hipp in the mid-'50s, before forming his own Joki Freund Quintet. During the late '50s they played various European festivals, together with visiting American musicians …
A collection of unreleased radio session recordings from the original tapes! The few recordings made by the New Jazz Group from Hannover in Germany are scarcely documented. The band was founded in -or around- 1954 by Bernd Rabe (alto sax and clarinet), pianist Klaus Wunderlich, drummer Helmut Perschke, bass player Eberhard Pommerencke and Karl Blume (baritone sax and vibraphone). This release documents a special chapter in German jazz history. Alto Saxophone, Clarinet – Bernd Rabe Baritone Saxop…
Jazz in Australia at its best with incredible sessions from autumn 1960 – three masters with unbelievable musical control and understanding. This album was recorded at the El Rocco club six weeks after the group was formed, and the boys claim they were only just becoming accustomed to one another’s playing. In all, they cut thirty different titles in two 3-hour sessions, all of which were one take only. This in itself is incredible as the resulting takes never fall below top-level
An amazing set from Swedish trombonist Eje Thelin – a live date, but a totally excellent session that stands as one of the best demonstration of his talents in the 60s! On the European scene at the time, Thelin was easily one of the most inventive players on the trombone – one of the few who could hit the soulful swing of American musicians like Curtis Fuller or JJ Johnson, but also an artist who was starting to stretch out into new realms too – just a touch of Grachan Moncur and Roswell Rudd, w…
CD version. BeJazz is happy to come up with a true “holy” modern/free jazz gems of the late 1960s. The original double LP was issued by Meno Liechtenstein’s CB Records – he was also the organizer of the “International Holy Hill Jazz Meeting” in Heidelberg/Germany. The sound quality on the original album was not really bad – but it certainly was not really good as well. We spent a lot of work on a proper restoration of the live tapes. The result is truly amazing – after almost 50 years we are now…
Batlahatli starts where Drookitarlùp left off. Giancarlo Toniutti and James Wyness developed two electroacoustic compositions out of sound materials collected during their European travels in search for drookitarlùp. Exploring different relational morphologies, opening their systems to timbrally charged forms, from two points of the universe, it is true that, albeit the "archaic" descriptor was not entirely apt, they extended their theoretical investigations in music.
"Clustering on the geometry…
Giancarlo Toniutti and James Wyness met several times in various European places to compose drookitarlùp, a 23' piece for 42 players with mostly folk, extraeuropean, or self-built and unusual wind, string, friction and percussion acoustic instruments. An orchestra of specialised players, The Kafkian Cladistique Claque, gathered with the authors at Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra, Slovakia.
They rehearsed time and again, then both composers conducted one performance each with their specific interpr…
Tip! The final two LPs in the latest Ictus batch, “The Ictus Archives Vol. 1” and “The Ictus Archives Vol. 2”, both draw on the same period that the veteran saxophonist produced “Clangs” and “Trio Live”, both recorded in 1976 during of two weeks that he was touring Italy with Andrea Centazzo, released in 1976 and 77 respectively, and reissued in 2021’s batch. Gathering four sides of material, issued as two individual LPs, we are offered an incredible insight into that moment’s striking collabo…

**2023 repress** Out of print and hotly pursued on the secondary market, we’re thrilled to announce a much needed reissue initiative, dedicated to Ictus’ back catalog, beginning with four LPs, Steve Lacy and Andrea Centazzo’s Clangs, originally issued in 1976, Derek Bailey and Andrea Centazzo’s Drops, originally issued in 1977, Steve Lacy, Andrea Centazzo, and Kent Carter’s Trio Live, also from 1977, and John Zorn, Andrea Centazzo, Eugene Chadbourne, Tom Cora, Toshinori Kondo, and Polly Bradfiel…
The new cd with Norwegian composer Eivind Buene and his composition, asymmetrical music. This is Sofa first release with a written score, but it doesn't mean that improvisation is abandoned. On the contrary, asymmetrical music focuses on the meeting point between composition and improvisation. The two soloists, Ivar Grydeland guitar and Ingar Zach Ð percussion, are improvising as a duo but also on another level, with the written score. The members of the Ensemble featured on this disc are also v…
*2025 stock* Born in 1981 from industrial music progenitors Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV is fronted by Throbbing Gristle cofounder, anti-hero, artist, and pandrogyne Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Psychic TV is particularly known for its intense and visceral live performances and for a creative lineage that includes such cultural luminaries as William S. Burroughs, Derek Jarman, and Timothy Leary, among others. In 2003, New York-based artist and musician Edley ODowd gently persuaded Genesis to reki…
“The interpreter is a very important person indeed in Cage’s piano music, and a top international expert like Steffen Schleiermacher is a must for a complete recording such as this one: he knows the nuts and bolts and all the fine nuances.”
Angel Tears in Sunlight is Pauline Anna Strom’s first album in over thirty years; an assemblage of music that refracts the expansiveness, and minutiae, of imagined realms while embracing the kaleidoscopic echoes of our distant epochs.
The capacity to collapse time might elucidate the enigma of Pauline Anna Strom. A mystic force in music, emerging during the dawn of new age as the Trans-Millenia Consort, the pioneering synthesist channelled primordial energies into future-facing sound through a s…
*2022 stock. 300 copies limited edition* “De tragedie van een liedjesschrijver zonder woorden” (The tragedy of a song writer without words) is the first normal CD by Orphax. This album contains music that has been written between April 2005 and July 2007 and retouched again in 2008 and 2010. The period these songs were written was one with many transitions in the live of van Erve. It was the end of his student years, the begin of his working years, a period where he struggled with an at that tim…
** 2021 Stock ** 45 years after his debut album Valley of Search (1975/India Navigation), jazz saxophonist Alan Braufman returns. The Fire Still Burns has that gritty, forthright sensibility we hope to hear in sonic collaborations borne out of beauty and struggle, but there’s a populist ease that comes with age and reflection. Put simply it’s natural music – complementary, individual, and full of the sweet, hot taste of celebration.
Another offering from fringe pop combo BIRD NAMES. The band is a duo, of sorts, comprised of PHELAN LA VELLE & DAVID LINEAL, though a cast of characters have helped them along. They explore a pop sound that touches as much on the naïve as it does the borders of avant-experimentation. The album is 12 songs of Beach Boys "Smiley Smile", psychedelic rhythms, & dense, lo-fi pop songcraft.(SAKI)
