Originally released in 1996, it was their second double CD of the year (along with Dante's Disneyland Inferno). Partly an ethno-surrealist take on places and forms known (Indonesian gamelan, Bollywood soundtracks, Polynesian folk, surf stylistics, & sci-fi thematics) and partly a stupefying surreal ethnography of places yet to be discovered as the collective Bishop Brothers, Mssrs. Gocher and Kang walk that liminal tightrope between Here and There.""Kickin' the Dragon" was live recorded at the “…
Other Planes of There (1964) presents Sun Ra (piano) and his Solar Arkestra once again pushing the boundaries on five Ra originals. The exceedingly experimental works are marked by the performers as much as they are by the compositions. The opening title track is an expansive suite of sounds adhering only to the boundless limits of the combo's sonic canvas. Each soloist is given ample room to propel the piece between the inspired Arkestra interjections, which in turn clears the way for the next …
We Travel the Spaceways was recorded at a handful of sessions in Chicago from 1956-1959, possibly 1960. Although several of the tunes also appear on other '50s era recordings, as usual, personnel and arrangements differ from album to album. Many of the tunes are quite bluesy, with tympani, bells, and percussion adding an exotic flair, but the big event here is the appearance of the "space chant," which would become an Arkestra calling card for decades to come. The band was starting to she…
The first album on Saturn! Despite the futurism that the title of the set might imply, the material on this LP is actually some of Sun Ra's earliest, and dates back to the years when the Arkestra was first beginning to make itself heard in Chicago. That doesn't stop the material from being amazing, though, as these prime early tracks really show how strong Ra's vision was, even when it was being applied to material that might look more simple on the surface.

2010 release. Limited edition of 600. Shadows Out of Time is a collection of three LPs with previously unreleased and formerly cassette-only material from Hunting Lodge,
representing the first era of their creativity, a time when each sonic
experiment festered into a beautiful sore. Dark ambient, noise, power
electronics -- all represented here before these pigeons had holes in
which to fit. One LP comprises the now-legendary Exhumed (1983),
which was formerly released on cassette only, hea…
'Rifts' is a double disc collection of three hugely essential albums of psycho-sythual experimentation produced by Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never for the Arbor and No Fun imprints. Much like his contemporaries Emeralds, Lopatin is one of those enviably prolific underground figures, constantly committing his experiments to limited runs of sought-after CDRs and cassettes over the last two years. To shed a little light on his background, his father was a member of Russian psych out…

One of the first solo saxophone recordings of the 60s – recorded as one of the first few sessions by a young Anthony Braxton! As the title implies, the whole album features alto sax – played freely by Braxton with a depth of creativity and sense of humanity to rival any of the previous greatness of his generation from bigger names on labels like Impulse or ESP. There's a great sense of restraint here too – not one that has Braxton on the inside of the jazz spectrum, but which keeps him …

This historic collection gathers together the four seminal solo albums recorded by Alvin Curran (b. 1938) in the 1970s. Two, Fiori Chiari Fiori Oscuri and The Works, are making their first appearance on CD. Author-critic Tim Page, an early advocate of these works, writes, 'Curran weaves electronic technology, an occasional acoustic instrument, voices and musique concrète ('found' music) into a multi-hued tapestry of sound. He holds these dissimilar elements together with a compelling subliminal …
AMONG THE WIRE'S BEST OF 2010! Joshua Abrams in an infectious groove-based album built around the guimbri, a 3-stringed animal hide bass used by the Gnawa of North Africa. "Bassist & composer Joshua Abrams has been in the thick of Chicago's vibrant music scene for fifteen years, playing & recording as leader & sideman in projects across the genres. He co-founded the 'back porch minimalist' band Town & Country (Thrill Jockey/Box Media), & with Matana Roberts & Chad Taylor, the trio Sticks & Stone…

Limited vinyl edition. Includes a 50-minute bonus CD featuring some of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's original material reworked by Type label head John Twells (Xela). As a member of San Francisco legends Tarentel and Type's premier astral travelers The Alps, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma is hardly a new addition to the label, so it's hard to believe that Love Is A Stream is his first Type solo album. With previous releases on Arbor, Spekk and his own Root Strata imprint, this latest album marks his journey int…
