A glimpse of where the German electronic world had drifted by the mid-1980s. Dream Code (1987) was a double-LP sampler from Innovative Communication, the label Klaus Schulze had founded, and by this point its compass had swung from cosmic music toward a sleek, international new age and electronic pop. The bill is telling: Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Art Of Noise, Kitaro, set beside IC's own roster of sequencer artists such as Robert Schröder and Software. Subtitled Style Goes Beyond Time, it is polished, melodic, very much of its moment, and a useful document of how the Berlin school's machines met the marketplace.
