The Stranglers make their most unabashed pop album yet with Dreamtime, but some really strong songs make it palatable. Cornwell’s transformation from snarling thug to sensitive smoothie may have galled some old fans, but Always The Sun may even be the best pop tune they ever recorded. Gorgeous and tranquil with polished hooks and a gently uplifting chorus, Always The Sun should have become a radio staple. It’s not alone either – You’ll Always Reap What You Sow is another laid-back gem, its country guitars a first for the band as they explore new, chill textures. The title track is also pretty great, a nice slinky piece of xylophone underpinning a steady beat and an earworm chorus.
