*200 copies limited edition* While her main instrument is baritone sax, Misaki Motofuji is a multi-instrumentalist with an excellent command of other saxophone types including tenor and alto, as well as clarinet and flute. In concerts she additionally makes wide-ranging use of electronics, vocals, field recordings and various effects and objects, spontaneously assembling splendid, amazingly well constructed performances. In May 2022 Motofuji performed a concert of this type at Ftarri, Tokyo, which was released the following November on Hitorri as the CD "Yagateyamu," garnering widespread acclaim.
Since then, Motofuji has continued intermittently carrying out solo performances using numerous instruments, further deepening her skills in performance and musical structure. From the Hitorri label, two CDs documenting solo performances by Motofuji at Ftarri in 2024 are set to be released simultaneously.
"Evoke" documents a 38-minute performance that took place on February 25, 2024. Motofuji used a larger number of instruments than usual—flute, clarinet, soprano/alto/tenor/baritone saxophones, voice, lip noise, field recordings, electronics, effects, karimba and whistle—and incorporated elements including the first movement of her own composition "Institution Suite," resulting in a highly ambitious and fascinating work. As a bonus track, the CD also includes a solo performance by Motofuji at Ftarri on December 31, 2023. Using only clarinet, baritone sax and voice, the work abounds in the charm of acoustic instrumental improvisation.
