The best-selling instrumentalist in the world, with over 70 million albums sold to date, Kenny G. is an international superstar who has earned countless prestigious awards throughout an illustrious career that spans three decades. He has distinguished himself as a master craftsman and one of the most gifted artists in the world, through nineteen best-selling releases. Now add one more to that list of multiple-platinum chart-topping records: NOTHING SPECIAL. Kenny's first album in at least 10 weeks finds the multi-talented artist and WFMU DJ once again effortlessly bridging the genres of pop, psychodrama and the avant garde with his distinctive and instantly recognizable style. The co-writer of the thirteen tracks he produced with Grammy Award-winning producer and longtime associate People Like Us, each cut is infused with the kind of heartfelt relentlessness that has endeared them to audiences the world over. The tenth track co-produced by Kenny, "Greatest Nobody" was written and produced by multi-faceted sound artist Vicki Bennett who is the featured samplist on the standout, hitbound ballad. Legend of his generation Neil Diamond lends his vocal support to "You'll Be A", the lead single from NOTHING SPECIAL which became the most-added track on Adult Contemporary, WABC and WFMU radio formats when released and later withdrawn in August 2002. The album's title cut, "Nothing" has the kind of unzipped melancholy that has become People Like Us's musical trademark through their remarkable twelve-year career as a recording artist. Echoing their 1996 classic "Trompette De Cul", the wistful "More Sorry" is a smooth, mood-evoking piece that captures the very essence of Kenny's mimicry; and in turn the album's closing cut, "I've Got You" is - as the title indeed suggests - dulcet and acetic, affording Kenny just one more opportunity once more to demonstrate his inumerable skills as the premier saxophonist known to man. From the languid beauty of "Close To Me" to festive rhythmic flavor of "Counting Time", Kenny demonstrates why his music has had such an enduring and memorable effect. The simply almost-classical sound of "Too Far" contrasts with very limited edition bonus track "Anal Magic," a so-funky jam with a decidedly 'cut-up' feel that features many off key musicians. Keeping the groove moving, People Like Us offers "Wake Up", another perky slice of avant-flavored edgy jazz; while the intoxicating "Give Up It's Mine" conjures up visions of horror with no consolation. With a national tour in 2003 and the People Like Us-featured crossover cut "So Sorry" among the standouts on NOTHING SPECIAL, People Like Us and Kenny G. can look forward to yet another rewarding chapter in what continues to be an accomplishment-filled career.
