On Paradise Cove, Misha Panfilov and Shawn Lee build a sun‑bleached instrumental universe where deep‑funk pulse, soft‑psych haze and library exotica glide together. Surf‑tinted guitars, analogue keys and supple rhythm work trace a 35‑minute arc that feels like a lost soundtrack to a dream resort just slightly out of time.

Paradise Cove is what happens when two inveterate crate‑diggers and studio tinkerers decide to invent their own imaginary record shelf. Teaming up across Tallinn, London and a shared cosmos of references, Misha Panfilov and Shawn Lee conjure an instrumental album that plays like a postcard from a place that never quite existed: part 70s library LP, part surf‑soul daydream, part soft‑focus cosmic funk. Recorded with the easy confidence of two multi‑instrumentalists who know their way around tape hiss and tight arrangements, the record treats nostalgia not as a costume but as a palette, splashing its colours across twelve compact, hook‑rich tracks.

Panfilov’s evolution from deep funk architect to kraut‑curious psych traveller finds a natural counterpart in Lee’s long history of groove‑driven studio projects, soundtrack work and sun‑dazed pop experiments. Here, their sensibilities dovetail into a sound that is both relaxed and meticulously built. Guitars shimmer and twang in reverb‑sweetened lines that nod to surf and spaghetti western themes without ever collapsing into pastiche. Electric pianos, organs and analogue synths sketch out lush harmonies and melodic motifs, often doubling or shadowing the guitar lines to create a subtle, prismatic effect. Underneath, bass and drums keep everything grounded in feel: lines are fat but unhurried, beats sit just behind the grid, giving the whole record a gentle sway.

The “cove” in the title is less a literal beach than a state of mind. Each piece feels like a different angle on the same shoreline: a lazy mid‑tempo lope here, a more propulsive, almost library‑funk chase scene there, a twilight vignette where vibraphone and tremolo guitar trade sighs over brushed drums. Melodies arrive quickly and stick around just long enough to lodge themselves, then make way for the next scene. Even at its most laid‑back, the music avoids wallpaper; there’s always a small twist in the harmony, a change in instrumentation, a slyly placed percussion detail that pulls the ear back in. It’s the kind of record that can soundtrack an afternoon but repays headphone attention with layer after layer of small decisions.

Collaboration is written into the record’s DNA. Rather than dividing roles rigidly, Panfilov and Lee treat the studio as a shared instrument, overdubbing, swapping parts and blurring individual fingerprints into a collective signature. You can hear their shared love of vintage production techniques in the way drums are mic’d, in the warmth of the low end, in the gentle saturation on keys and guitars. Yet Paradise Cove never feels like an exercise in retro fetishism; there’s a lightness, even a playfulness, in the way they let old sounds carry new moods. Small details – a dubbed‑out delay throw, a sudden stereo pan, a fleeting synth line – remind you that this is contemporary music having a conversation with its ancestors rather than reenacting them.
