Pianist Jonas Cambien, bassist Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard and drummer Dag Erik Knedal Andersen have been indispensable to followers of the eclectic creative music scene in Oslo for years; among others with bands such as The Handover, Reôlo, Maca Conu, Delish, Cortex and Sulida. Until now, only lucky concertgoers have been able to experience their excellent improvising trio, but fortunately Motvind Records are doing something about that!

"The Ear Behind the Airport" is a multifaceted being. Between Cambien's razor sharp prepared piano, and Andersen's surgically precise pointillism, Nergaard grounds the music with unconventional bass techniques. With great ease, they move from enveloping drones, with echoes from the British impro tradition, to ecstatic grooves that nod towards free jazz.

Despite the fact that this is the trio's debut album, the listener is greeted by an exceptionally well-balanced band. Energetic calm fills the music with nerve and momentum; blurs the lines between the contemplative and the expressive. An extraordinary sense of consonance and texture treatment makes the music tactile; something you can really dive into. Their music is experienced as one body in motion, which slowly accelerates. It sounds mature, but by no means lazy. It is rough and direct, but at the same time eloquent and generous. It addresses both the patient and the restless. It has weight, and stands firmly in itself.

The album was recorded at Børsen Kulturhus; an artistic multipurpose mecca run by Guro Moe and Håvard Skaset. Renaissance man Lasse Marhaug is responsible for both the master and cover design, based on "Kontor I Stockholm (1994)" by the influential Swedish photographer Lars Tunbjörk. It may seem far from Tunbjörk's surreal depictions of Swedish suburbs and office landscapes, to the angularly abstract sound universe we are invited into with "The Ear Behind the Airport". However, both are strong testimonies to how magical and liberating it can be to look at the familiar with fresh perspectives.
