He made the trombone a bebop instrument, which had been considered flatly impossible, and he did it by developing an articulation so clean that people accused him of playing valve trombone. J.J. Johnson's mid-fifties Blue Note sessions are where that achievement is best documented, and this first volume has an extraordinary supporting cast: Clifford Brown on trumpet, Jimmy Heath on reeds, John Lewis at the piano, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke underneath. Speed, precision and total harmonic command, plus a compositional sense that made him one of the most respected writers of his generation.

Side 1 recorded at WOR Studios, NYC, June 2nd, 1953. Side 2 recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ, September 24th, 1954. Came with a circular blue/white obi sticker on shrink wrap with info in Japanese language, and a fold-out insert with Japanese liner notes.
