Piano and oboe, which is an unusual proposition in any context. Ira Stein and Russel Walder were among the more interesting acts on Windham Hill, the California label that invented an entire commercial category in the eighties and has been unfairly dismissed ever since as background music for people with expensive stereos. Some of it was. This is not: the writing is genuinely chamber-scaled, the oboe is used as an equal voice rather than a decorative one, and the recording quality is exactly as good as the label's reputation suggests. Calm, precise and considerably more substantial than the genre label implies.
Windham Hill pressing. Increasingly picked over by listeners coming to it from ambient and fourth world rather than from jazz.
