Peter Maxwell Davies wrote Vesalii Icones in 1969 for a dancer, solo cello and ensemble, joining the fourteen Stations of the Cross to the anatomical plates of Andreas Vesalius. Foxtrots and pastiche Victorian hymns cut through music of great violence, and the final station turns the risen Christ into the Antichrist.
The cello part, played by Jennifer Ward Clarke, is the thread of the whole piece. With The Fires of London, including Alan Hacker on basset clarinet, Stephen Pruslin on piano and harp and Judith Pearce, recorded on 1 and 2 October 1970. Programme and presentation by Ken Russell. Original 1971 Unicorn edition in gatefold sleeve, with red labels.
