Andrea Belfi

Andrea Belfi (1979) has been playing drums since the age of 14. He studied art in Milan and has been working in the experimental music field since 2000. In his live set AB faces the audience with an essential drum set, surrounded by synthesizers, a loop station, some contact microphones, an harmonica and two small-size speakers. The acoustic elements and the electronic ones mingle, intertwine and sometimes switch places: the acoustic sounds are treated as they were electronic, and the actual electronic ones are played at the very moment. Rhythmic patterns go beyond the mere beat as AB shapes them in cycles, ever-circling but ever-changing, both reassuring and surprising. A careful preparatory work, which consists in a previous and much reflected upon selection of emotional scenarios, allows the live set to be spontaneous and to “live the moment”, definitively avoiding any over-conceptualization. AB main achievement is the building of “proper” songs through a radical improvisation rather than through the use of fixed and codified elements.

Eternally Frozen
Eternally Frozen consists of a series of canon based compositions for brass ensemble, percussion and synthesizer by Andrea Belfi. The canon is an ancient compositional technique in which an initial melody is imitated at a specified time interval by one or more parts, creating illusionary never-ending musical journeys. The work is inspired by the evocative image of the Deprong Mori, a mythological bat with the alleged ability to fly through solid matter by bending atoms by its natural skill of aud…
Alveare
"Alveare, a collection of electroacoustic music by Italian percussionist / composer Andrea Belfi, is part of a collaborative multimedia project with photographer Matthias Heiderich. Inspired by Heiderich’s pictures of the modernist housing complexes put up in Italy after World War II, the LP’s five tracks were composed and played between 2007 and 2016. As befits Belfi’s status as a percussionist, all are firmly set on a foundation of rhythmic drumming or percussion work, often wrapped in an atmo…

Cera Persa
Electro-acoustic experimenter Andrea Belfi veers towards techno structures in Cera Persa for the Paris-based Latency label. Too somnambulant for the ‘floor, best suited for home listening immersion, the piece is cleft in two parts and follows a crumb trail of softly struck drums into fizzing, stereoscopic gloom, eventually encountering shuffling jazz hits and strange, scrabbly electronics therein. No handrails.
The Wired Salutation 3 of 3
Live recording from the performance of The Wired Salutation at Hebbel am Ufer Theater, August 18, 2013, Berlin. Interested in systems of rules and ordering principles that structure social behavior, Angela Bulloch creates multidisciplinary installations that explore creative connections between modern aesthetic and digitalism through various combinations of light, video, text, sound and different objects. Her functional works provoke the viewer’s way of interpretation of a different type of info…
Natura Morta
Andrea Belfi's Miasmah debut, consisting of a set of six rhythmically-anchored pieces for floating electronics & creaking drones that pay homage to Roberto Cacciapaglia et.al while keeping their contemporary sensibilities intact. Natura Morta, "dead nature" or "still life". This album can be understood as a powerful study of the minute details of the art of electro-acoustic composition, as much as the Renaissance "nature morte" were a masterful display of the artist’s skill in portraying t…
Dust & Mirrors
Dust & Mirrors’ is the second full-length album by the trio of Andrea Belfi (drums, percussion, electronics), David Grubbs (electric guitar, piano, voice), and Stefano Pilia (electric guitar). It follows 2010’s ‘Onrushing Cloud’ LP and finds the trio confidently taking stabs in a number of opposed directions. It dramatically widens the terrain in which the group operates. Between albums, the three musicians worked together on David Grubbs’s 2013 album ‘The Plain Where The Palace Stood’, and took…

Wege
Wege translates as 'path' and it's a fitting title for the latest rendering from master percussionist and experimental composer Andrea Belfi. The albums' four pieces act as orientation points through some imaginary sonic landscape. Wege is Belfi's forth LP (the first with Room40), and stems entirely from compositions completed at two artist-in-residence projects in Austria (Hotel Pupik) and in Brussels (Q-O2 Werkplatz). The album is built around a cyclic electro-acoustic system, through which Be…
Onrushing Cloud
Although Onrushing Cloud is the first recording by this trio, Andrea Belfi (drums, percussion, electronics), David Grubbs (electric guitar, voice, piano) and Stefano Pilia (electric guitar) share a common bond in that they’ve all released solo works via the Swedish label, Hapna. On this album Grubbs and Pilia combine instrumental forces while Belfi sets out a backdrop of highly sensitive percussion and electronics. The outcome is a single, half-hour, flowing body of work thatâÂÂ…
Pulses & Places
A striking collaboration took place between Andrea Belfi on drums and assorted small percussion and Rutger Zuydervelt on guitar and organ. Together they produce the 'pulses' and 'places' mentioned in the title. Organic yet partially improvised, it resembles a kind of sonic geography. The listener is taken away for a journey of mild drones, soft yet outspoken percussion. A strong release.

knots
** LAST COPIES** Italian drummer Andrea Belfi truly drives his new solo release into a poly-rhythmic drum circle from another dimension. The whole work not only sounds wonderful but, more importantly, Andrea Belfi has developed a strong spatial sense characterized by a crystal clear cymbal tone, deep, warm bass drum, drone-like electronica and a never ending groove.Belfi manages to combine all the pieces of his puzzle into something with a consistent, downcast mood (The Wire)really a beautiful p…
