David Murray

Country: United States

David Murray is an American jazz saxophonist and bass clarinetist, born in 1955 in the San Francisco Bay Area and based in New York. He arrived in New York in 1975, during the loft jazz years, and has recorded steadily since. He is best known as a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet and as a tenor player who drew on Albert Ayler and Ben Webster more than on John Coltrane. Murray studied at Pomona College, where Bobby Bradford was one of his teachers. In New York his early trio had Stanley Crouch on drums, and his early leader dates include Low Class Conspiracy (1976).
