On record the World Saxophone Quartet could sound almost formal, the writing so carefully worked out that the ensemble passages resemble chamber music. Live, all four of them blow. Live In Zurich catches the group in front of a European audience with the arrangements as a launching point rather than a destination: David Murray going into the altissimo register and staying there, Hamiet Bluiett's baritone rumbling underneath like a second rhythm section, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake arguing across the middle. The absence of drums stops mattering after about two minutes.
