Eight Jimi Hendrix songs for four saxophones, plus trombone, violin, electric bass and drums. Experience was recorded over three days, 13 to 15 March 2003, and released by Justin Time in 2004.

By then the World Saxophone Quartet had a new fourth voice. Bruce Williams, on alto and soprano, had replaced John Purcell alongside the three founders, Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake and David Murray. For the Hendrix material they brought in a rhythm section: Matthew Garrison on electric bass, Gene Lake (Oliver's son) on drums, Craig Harris on trombone and didgeridoo, and Billy Bang on violin.

The choices are not the obvious ones. No Purple Haze, no Voodoo Child. Instead Freedom, If 6 Was 9, Hey Joe, Machine Gun, Little Wing, Foxy Lady, Hear My Train a Comin' and The Wind Cries Mary. The Penguin Guide had apparently been waiting for it: "we wondered how long it would be before the WSQ tackled the Jimi Hendrix songbook," fresh, brash and sophisticated in the expected proportions. Reviews were split on whether it works as a whole. Kurt Gottschalk at All About Jazz found it rewarding but uneven; Phil DiPietro, on the same site, asked readers to name another sax quartet that had done Hendrix at all, let alone this well. SF Weekly called the readings spot-on and wildly personal at once.

Japanese CD edition from Solid's Justin Time series.
