Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, 4 and 5 April 1985. The George Adams - Don Pullen Quartet with Cameron Brown and Dannie Richmond, and a guest who changes the sound: John Scofield on guitar.

This was the rhythm section of Mingus's Changes One and Changes Two, minus Mingus, and between 1979 and 1989 it was one of the best working bands in jazz. JazzTimes, looking back, wrote that no group before or since bridged avant-garde abandon and gutbucket groove so convincingly, and that everyone who heard them in the flesh says the records never quite caught it.

The Copenhagen tape comes close on the fast numbers. Scofield's blues I.J. opens, Adams's Flame Games is the rock workout, Pullen's Well, I Guess We'll Never Know runs on rhythm changes with an altered bridge after a Richmond drum introduction. The second half slows down for Song Everlasting and Forever Lovers, where the Penguin Guide hears a unison statement between Scofield and Adams as the high point. Dusty Groove finds the guitar adding chromatic colour the studio records lack. AllMusic's Don Snowden was less sure the guest ever found common ground with the band. Fifty minutes, well recorded, with Brown's bass unusually present for a club tape.

Japanese CD edition from Solid's Timeless series.
