** Edition of 150 copies ** Another wonderful live session by the multi-instrumentalist Maurizio Abate, captured by Ulrich Rois (Bird People) in 2014 during his exhibition at the old location of the art association eLaSTiCo -- in the center of Bologna -- then mixed and edited by Maurizio himself. To be considered a twin release of the Live From The Border EP published in 2012, this single-sided release features a twenty-minute track that builds a ritual and meditative soundscape with the process…

Light the Currents is the third release by Glasgow's Sound of Yell, following their 2014 LP Brocken Spectre and 2015 single Fortunate Fume on Chemikal Underground. Composed by Stevie Jones, and performed together with Georgie McGeown, visual artist Vikki Morton (Muscles of Joy, Suckle) and Trembling Bell's Alex Neilson, Light the Currents is a bright and buoyant acoustic arrangement in two parts; the first written for a special performance at an exhibition of artwork by Katy Dove at Dundee Conte…
Micromanic is a colossal slab of percussive energy composed and performed by Berlin based Matti Gajek. Micromanic begins with tentative steps, which soon morph into a chattering electronic birdsong before giving way to an assertive, hammering bassline. The structure eventually crumbles into discordant noise and echoes, eventually giving way to something gentler and almost bucolic. Gajek weaves a complex and varied narrative with absolute technical aplomb, resulting in an experimental and hypnoti…
Rich La Bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate New York born in 1946. At age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered Monk, Mingus and Art Blakey. In 1965 Rich moved to Ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. After the band dissolved, he moved to NYC and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical Godspell. In the late 70s La Bonte moved to Hollywood with Shari Famous…
A pond in my living room’ is the second solo album of Montréal-based sound artist and wind player Philippe Lauzier, and his debut album for SOFA. On this record Lauzier is using multiple tracks of bass clarinet to create a luxuriant field of overtones and meticulous micropolyphonies. The result is a beautiful record with overlapping and long mesmeric sequences of sound.
Philippe Lauzier (b. 1977) is an active musician from Montreal, Canada. Working with several projects, Lauzier has been touring…
Sofa has been following Vilde&Inga since they started playing together back in 2010 and when they contacted us with the music from Silfr, there was no doubt in our minds. On Silfr they continue to develop the remarkable interplay from their first album, Makrofauna (ECM), but this time they turn the level up a couple of notches. On Silfr Vilde&Inga presents chamber music of international caliber. Each piece on the album dives into a microclimate which eventually reveals small musical pearls. The …
Keith Rowe and Michael Pisaro: 13 Thirteen | On this two-and-a-half hour, semi-improvised opus, the two guitarists and composers approach finely wrought detail and vast empty space in ways that can warp one’s perception of time itself. The 'icon of post-everything', Mike Cooper, returns to Discrepant with a recording of a live set recorded at the Controindicazioni Festival of Improvised Music in Rome in 2003. The music moves very slowly through four movements: ‘’Reluctant Swimmer’’, ‘’Movies is Magic’’, ''Virtual Surfer’’ and ‘’Dolphins’’. 'Floating in out of the exotic ether and disappearing like smoke, engulfed in the alien hugeness of nature... a very elegant set by a visionary artist.' Mike Cooper says 'the first half is p…
I recorded everything live in one take. The record is named "ima" which in Japanese translates to "now" or "in the moment" and is for my significant other Ami. We have unfortunately have had to do a long-distance thing which was/is more intense than I imagined it would be. I am away from her for a majority of each month and in those moments it can take a toll on me. These pieces are meant to capture that emotion, the sense of yearning, the pain of not being able to see someone you want to easily…
Ockeghem Octets continues Antoine Beuger’s radical series of ensemble pieces, starting from intimate duos and building incrementally to groups of twenty. In this installment, eight performers - including Ryoko Akama (melodica), Kate Halsall (harmonium), Ecka Mordecai (cello), Leo Svirsky (accordion), Seamus Cater (concertina), Sarah Hughes (e-bow zither), Harriet Richardson (flute), and Kathryn Williams (alto flute)- join in a practice of sustained listening and collective restraint. Beuger’s pr…
Spinet & Violin captures an extended, unedited improvisation by Christoph Schiller and Morgan Evans-Weiler, recorded at Schiller’s workshop in Basel during Evans-Weiler’s European tour. In this single-track work, the duo operates with rare intensity and mutual instinct, favouring gradual permutations of pitch and the slow revelation of timbre. Schiller’s prepared spinet, played with plucking, muting, and inside techniques, forms a delicate alloy with Evans-Weiler’s violin, which hovers between f…
Temps Espace consists of two pieces of DIY “musique concrète”. DIY because it was made outside of any academecism and done with the equipment that I owned at the time of the recordings, appropriate or not. Two tracks Inter…, in-between : one composition, intermezzo, was done 14 years ago and the other one, interfluve, 2 years ago. The connection between those tracks is the original sound material which was recorded at about the same time (early 2000s). Time and/or space are the central in the t…

After crossing wastelands lost in oblivion (Everything Collapse[d], Aagoo, 2014), and being skeptically moved by listening to pulsations of a weak life (Weak Life, Aagoo, 2015), Cristiano Deison and Andrea Gastaldello (aka Mingle) are arriving at their final destination, Innersuface, the last stop on their journey. They suddenly fall into a hole and are trapped in a slimy pit overflowing with mud and industrial liquids. Everything is dense and oppressive. Their physical movement stops, the chaos…

In 1985, Andrea Azzali and Simon Balestrazzi remained the only members of Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata (T.A.C.). They decided to reconfigure their work around tape manipulation. The two were recording in a studio in Florence and in an intense week, they realized Symphonie Industrielle. With the emergence of this new formation, however, T.A.C. dedicated itself to new projects and live performances, and the album was actually abandoned. Miraculously, the tapes have been recovered, and the res…
Unsounds is proud to present Anne La Berge’s new piece: RAW. Originally from Stillwater, Minesota and based in Amsterdam, the avant-flutist, improviser and composer has written an open-ended work for ensemble and electronics made up of fragmented gestures and shards of skeletal speech. Ensemble MAZE, of which Anne is a founding member, is performing the piece which was recorded at live at Splendor, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.“Play noise. Do not play at all. Play melodically.”RAW embraces the …
