Doxy

Live at the Hillcrest Club 1958
This record marks a turning point in jazz history. It may be the earliest recorded example of what Ornette Coleman later called "free jazz," and it represents the first rumblings of the revolutionary movement which eventually shifted jazz thinking away from bebop. This double LP includes the complete show recorded live at The Hillcrest Club of Los Angeles in 1958.
Hip Harp / On A Minor Groove
Doxy present a combined reissue of legendary jazz harpist and poly-instrumentalist Dorothy Ashby's Hip Harp and In A Minor Groove, both released separately in 1958. Both albums feature Frank Wess. Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene a…
The Stratus Seekers
Doxy presents a reissue of the George Russell Septet's The Stratus Seekers, originally issued in 1962. Joe Goldberg, from the original liner notes: "'Color' is a word that crops up with great frequency whenever George Russell discusses music. 'Dixieland has a color,' he has said; 'bop is a definite color, and so is atonality.' Following that train of thought, one might extend Russell's thesis and refer to him as a kaleidoscopic musical figure: so many different 'colors,' to use his phrase, …
Il Federale
Doxy present Ennio Morricone's complete soundtrack for the 1961 film Il Federale (The Fascist) on vinyl for the first time. This soundtrack written by a young Morricone for Luciano Salce's Il Federale starring Ugo Tognazzi, is a music jewel containing many elements so typical of his later style that he has developed and matured during his incredible career; this score is important from a historical point of view since it represents Morricone's absolute first film scoring assignment. First time c…
Il Terrorista

Directed in 1963 by Gianfranco De Bosio and starring Gian Maria Volontè, Anouk Aimée, Tino Carraro, Philippe Leroy, the great Piero Piccioni created "easy listening" music such as foxtrots, band music, waltzes as opposed to serious music for large orchestras that dramatically describes all the historical and political aspect of the story. Complete version for the first time on vinyl. Ed…
Lost Continent
Doxy present Angelo Lavagnino's soundtrack for the 1968 film, The Lost Continent. From an interview with the Maestro Lavagnino, one of the legendary Italian score masters: "If I talk about The Lost Continent, I talk about one of my favorites, just because it gave me the opportunity to show myself as a man and as a composer. I was gone for more than six months in Indonesia. At that time, for an Italian, going to Indonesia was like Marco Polo going to China! I found there what I expected to f…
Boccaccio '70
Doxy present a reissue of Nino Rota and Armando Trovajoli's soundtrack for the 1962 Italian anthology film, Boccaccio '70. From original liner notes: "Two of Italy's top soundtrack musicians, Nino Rota and Armando Trovajoli, are responsible for the exciting music featured in Boccaccio '70. Rota has been the composer of dozens of famous film soundtracks and his music contributed greatly to Fellini's previous hit films, La Strada (1954), I Vitelloni (1953) and La Dolce Vita (1960). In The Tempt…

Knife in the Water: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Krzysztof Komeda is regarded as one of the most significant European jazz musicians of the 20th century. His performances with the Komeda Sextet paved the way for modern jazz in Poland and soon caught the attention of filmmakers like the great Roman Polanski. Behind Brigitte Bardot
Equal parts concept record and mash note, Behind Brigitte Bardot celebrates the legendary French sex kitten via West Coast jazz interpretations of her biggest film themes. The precise raison d'être behind the album is a mystery, but it's nevertheless a charmer, boasting some of Pete Rugolo's lushest and loveliest arrangements. Teamed with an all-star cast including altoist Bud Shank and trumpeters Jack Sheldon and Pete Candoli, Rugolo adapts themes like "Arsenic Blues," "Mambo Bardot" and "T…
Charade
Henry Mancini's soundtrack provides an easy listening tour of continental musical history: Parisian café songs on "Bistro," Eastern European gypsy music on "Bateau Mouche," Schubert quartets on "Bye Charlie," and some beer barrel polka on "Punch and Judy." Thrown in for variety's sake are dashes of Bond soundtracks, Cossack songs, and Strauss waltzes.Mancini also shows his south of the border touch on "Mambo Parisienne" (picture Perez Prado sporting an accordion), "Latin Snowfall" (transcende…

Jazz In The Space Age
Doxy present a reissue of George Russell And His Orchestra's Jazz In The Space Age, featuring Bill Evans and originally released in 1960. From the original liner notes of Burt Korall: "(...) This album points the way to the future. It is prophetic because George Russell felt compelled to make it so. 'Jazz is changing, the sixties could well be a crucial decade,' says the composer. 'One thing is certain. A variety of sound and rhythms, many of which are alien to what audiences are used to, w…
The Eastern Moods Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik
Doxy present a reissue of Ahmed Abdul-Malik's The Eastern Moods Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik, originally released in 1962. One of the most compelling albums ever recorded by Ahmed Abdul-Malik, the set's got a style that's very strongly in keeping with the "eastern moods" of the title - with less of a jazz sound than some of Abdul Malik's other work, and more spare, exotic instrumentation overall. The group on the set is a trio - Ahmed on bass and oud, Bilal Abdurrahman on alto, Korean reed flute, …
The Eldridge Session
The great bassist and band leader Charles Mingus cut some of his most exciting and rewarding recordings in 1960. Taped during the apex of Mingus's creativity, this incredible session showcases such stars as Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Jo Jones on drums. First edition of 500 (numbered).
The Throne of Blood
Masaru Sato, who worked at Toho Studios under the legendary Fumio Hayasaka, composed this chilling score for Akira Kurosawa's 1957 masterpiece based heavily on traditional Japanese music, especially influenced by Noh dramas. Limited edition first press of 500 copies on white vinyl.
Seven Samurai
Fumio Hayasaka first worked with Akira Kurosawa in 1948 when he composed the score for Drunken Angel. Many hold the partnership of Hayasaka and Kurosawa in the same esteem as that of Nino Rota and Federico Fellini; an incomparable team, with the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Hayasaka scored seven of Kurosawa's best films and died while scoring his eighth. Seven Samurai (1954) was his last complete Kurosawa score. Limited edition first press of 500 copies on white vinyl.
Bold Conceptions
This is the original Bob James; his very first album, in fact, recorded at age 22 (and produced by Quincy Jones) as a prize for winning the 1962 Collegiate Jazz Festival.
Le Concerts du Domaine Musical 1956
Doxy presents a reissue of "Les Concerts du Domaine Musical", originally released by the French label Véga in 1956. Le Domaine Musical was a concert society established by Pierre Boulez in Paris, which was active from 1954 to 1973. Boulez intended to provide opportunities for new music, after a general musical migration from Germany and Austria to Paris in the wake of those countries' legacy of war-torn decades without music. Le Domaine Musical created an exciting milieu in which the best an…
Looking Ahead!
"One of Cecil Taylor's earliest recordings, Looking Ahead! (1959) does just that while still keeping several toes in the tradition. It's an amazing document of a talent fairly straining at the reins, a meteor about to burst onto the jazz scene and render it forever changed. Looking Ahead! is a vital recording from the nascence of one of the towering geniuses of modern music and belongs in any jazz fan's collection." --AllMusic
