For a long time, we had been working on a very different album, guided by a simple set of methods: feedback, the layering of short sound fragments, and a process of repeated listening through which memory and response gradually accumulated. At a certain point, we felt the need to step away from that framework, if only temporarily. We decided instead to engage in a free musical exchange and explore a conversation through improvisation. It's from that encounter this body of music emerged.

When we returned to the recordings, we were both surprised by how strongly we felt about them. Almost immediately, we agreed that the music, as it had been captured, was too compelling to set aside. Perhaps it resonated with each of us in different ways; in fact, we never discussed its meaning in any detail. We simply decided to present these recordings as Fray Field.

For us, working with abstract timbral music, without a clearly defined melodic or harmonic narrative, means embracing the possibility of multiple interpretations. That openness exists both in the act of playing and in the act of listening: in how we respond to one another, and in how an audience might encounter the work. Any shared concept or underlying perspective behind this record remains difficult to define, and perhaps it need not be defined at all. What draws us to making music in this way is precisely that sense of openness: the space it creates for reflection, association, and drift. We hope these recordings offer listeners the freedom to move through thought and memory, through dream and imagination, and to discover their own connection to what is here.
