Ghost Logik is a solo album by Edward Ka-Spel, singer and co-founder of The Legendary Pink Dots, released by the Italian label Rustblade in 2012. His own Bandcamp page describes it as the first solo album he recorded after moving back to the UK. Its eight pieces, just under an hour in all, move between long passages of spoken word over ambient sound and slower psychedelic songs. Announcing it in Louder Than War, Ka-Spel described it as a voyage into the most hidden recesses of the subconscious mind.
According to the sleeve notes, the album was recorded at LPD.UK and on Fire Island between January and March 2012. Ka-Spel plays all the instruments and provides all the voices himself. The cover photograph is by Nomeus and the artwork by Alessia Catanuto. Rustblade issued the music in three versions: this single CD, a limited box of 250 with a bonus disc of ambient pieces called Spectrescapes, and a deluxe box of 99. The deluxe box added a third disc, Patriot (Version Apocalypse), and a DVD with a short film directed by Rosamaria Montalbano.
The album is framed by two miniatures, the opening Ticket and the closing Bye Bye, each around a minute long. Throwing Things is the closest thing to a conventional song, with a lilting, almost nursery-rhyme vocal over shimmering, skittering electronics. The Voyeur, nearly ten minutes, is a monologue delivered over minimal drones and crackle, by turns chilling and darkly funny. The longest track, the thirteen-minute Brighton Line, includes an extended section that leans toward jazz and beat poetry. In between, Favourite Things Parts 1-3 and The Bunker each run past nine minutes.
Brainwashed reviewed the album at length and named The Voyeur its highlight. The reviewer wrote that "the high points of Ghost Logik are truly mesmerizing, haunting, and unique", while finding some of the longer pieces uneven. The same review singled out the way Ka-Spel drops the listener into an enigmatic scenario and slowly raises the tension. He returned to the title with Ghost Logik 2 in 2014, and in 2023 put a remastered version of the album on his own Bandcamp, noting that the Rustblade discs had become scarce.
This is the original single CD edition on Rustblade (RBL035), released in 2012 and packaged in an oversized six-panel cardboard cover.
