Three trumpet players who between them settled what the instrument would sound like for the rest of the century, collected from late forties and early fifties sessions. Dizzy Gillespie is the architect: harmonic invention at impossible speed, the whole vocabulary of bop laid out in a few choruses. Fats Navarro is the tragedy, a player of extraordinary tone and logic who was dead at twenty-six. Miles Davis is the young man in the corner who could not match either of them for velocity and therefore invented something else entirely. Hearing the three of them side by side is genuinely instructive.

Japanese New Jazz pressing, mono. Compilation rather than an original album, and a very well-chosen one.
