August 1955, Van Gelder's place in Hackensack, and a session that has been talked about for seventy years mostly because of an argument that may never have happened. Miles Davis, Milt Jackson on vibes, a twenty-three year old Jackie McLean on alto, Ray Bryant at the piano, Percy Heath and Art Taylor. Whatever the studio atmosphere, the music is loose, blues-heavy and thoroughly good-humoured, with Jackson and McLean pulling in opposite directions and Miles sounding entirely relaxed about it. Bryant's "Changes" is the sleeper. This is Miles a few months before the first great quintet made everything else look like a rehearsal.
