A tenor player who bridged swing and bop more gracefully than almost anyone, and who was found dead in the Nevada desert in 1955 at thirty-four under circumstances that have never been satisfactorily explained. Wardell Gray played with Basie, cut the legendary tenor battles with Dexter Gordon, and left behind a body of work built on long, singing, logically constructed lines and a tone of real warmth. This second Prestige memorial volume collects sessions from his best years, with rhythm sections of the first rank. Nothing here strains for effect. That is exactly why it lasts.
