Born in Panama, arrived in New York in 1962, played on On The Corner and Live-Evil with Miles Davis, then made a run of records for Muse that have been quietly changing hands at serious money ever since. Carlos Garnett plays tenor and soprano with a thick, keening, Pharoah-adjacent tone, and Journey To Enlightenment is spiritual jazz in the full sense: modal vamps, wordless vocals, percussion layered until the rhythm stops being countable, and a devotional intent that is stated rather than implied. The connective tissue between the Miles electric bands, Norman Connors and everything that got called deep jazz two decades later.
