Jaime de Angulo (1887-1950) was a linguist and ethnographer who spent years among the Pit River people and other tribes of Northern California, writing down their languages, stories and songs. His essay on their music, first published in 1931, describes the vocal melodies and rhythms through transcriptions in Western notation, with a close ear for how the singing actually works.

Peter Garland edited this 1988 volume for his Soundings Press, adding Pit River songs, the Song of Los Pesares and his own musical index to de Angulo's Old Timer stories. An 8 by 11 inch softbound book of 96 pages, printed in Santa Fe.
