The fourth volume of Éliane Radigue's Occam Ocean gathers three pieces made with Bertrand Gauguet (alto saxophone), Yannick Guédon (voice, treble viol) and Carol Robinson (birbynė, bass clarinet), musicians who developed the works with the composer through oral transmission, without a written score.
Occam Delta XIX, for voice, treble viol, birbynė and alto saxophone, sets four very different timbres on the same slowly drifting pitch until they become hard to tell apart. Occam XXII is a solo for Guédon's baritone voice, held steady while the overtones inside it open and close. Occam River XXII, co-composed with Robinson, pairs alto saxophone and bass clarinet in long breaths whose beating intervals grow ever finer.
As always with Radigue, almost nothing seems to happen and everything changes: about seventy minutes of sustained sound in which attention itself becomes the subject.
