A comprehensive panorama of Spanish contemporary piano music in a single LP - and a document whose importance as a historical record of the compositional scene in Spain in the 1980s is considerable. The pianist Humberto Quagliata recorded this anthology in collaboration with the Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and the works assembled span a representative range of the country's serious compositional voices: Ramón Barce, Tomás Marco, and composers from the younger generation operating across multiple aesthetic territories - from the rigorously structured to the expressively free, from the systematically minimal to the gestural and dramatic.
Played on a Kawai EX Grand Concert piano, the recording has the directness and intimacy of a recital rather than the weight of a monument - a listener's guide to a living scene rather than a canonical anthology. The works of Barce, Marco, and their contemporaries had been largely absent from international discography, and this LP, issued by Polygram with the support of the INAEM, remains one of the few documents through which the full range of Spanish contemporary piano writing of this period can be auditioned. Polygram, D-1000.
