A journey into an exceptionally creative time in the history of Polish cinema. This collection of music from films that Wojciech Jerzy Has made at the Feature Film Studio (Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych) in Wrocław is an intriguing survey of the inventiveness of composers as renowned as Lucjan Kaszycki, Wojciech Kilar and Krzysztof Penderecki.
Released for the centenary of Has's birth, the compilation documents the director's Wrocław period. From the tapes that have survived in the studio's archive to this day, previously unreleased recordings of original incidental music were selected: by Kaszycki (including his score for Złoto, written with Hollywood sweep), Penderecki (the electronic experiments of Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie), Stanisław Radwan (jazz-tinged recordings from Szyfry) and Kilar (the ascetic Lalka). Like Has's filmography itself, they show a wide range of interests, fascinations and styles.
The compilation Reżyseria: Wojciech Jerzy Has comes out on CD, remastered from the original tapes in the studio's archive. The booklet contains an essay by Łukasz Maciejewski on Has's work and a separate piece on the music itself and its recordings. The disc continues the joint series of WFF Wrocław and GAD Records presenting the most interesting film music recordings from the studio's archives. The programme: Wspólny pokój (tracks 1 to 5, opening with Czerwone chmury performed by Wiesława Drojecka), Złoto (tracks 6 to 11), a piano suite from Jak być kochaną (track 12), electronic music from Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie (track 13), dance music from Szyfry (tracks 14 and 15) and Lalka (tracks 16 to 20).
