The Italian budget labels of the seventies did a considerable service to European collectors by licensing, repackaging and occasionally simply borrowing American jazz recordings that were otherwise unobtainable. Statements is one of those: Charles Mingus material gathered up and issued on Lotus with minimal ceremony and priced for people who could not afford imports. The music survives the treatment. Mingus at any point in his career is one of the two or three most identifiable sounds in the whole art form, and no amount of sloppy packaging obscures the bass, the writing or the anger.
