LP version. The Danish guitarist Jakob Bro recorded Taking Turns in New York in March 2014, and the session waited ten years for release. It brings together three generations of improvisers around seven of his pieces, and it is the last record of his long association with Lee Konitz, who died in 2020. ECM released it in November 2024, and it sounds like a group album rather than an all-star meeting.
Konitz, then 86, plays alto and, unusually for him, soprano saxophone. Bro shares the guitar chair with Bill Frisell, while Jason Moran (piano), Thomas Morgan (double bass) and Andrew Cyrille (drums) complete the sextet. Moran was the only one Bro had not worked with before. The date followed the trilogy of Balladeering, Time and December Song, made with Konitz for Bro's own label. Cyrille took the place once held by Paul Motian, Bro's mentor. James A. Farber engineered at Avatar Studios. Bro and Thomas Vang mixed the tapes in Copenhagen in August 2024, and Manfred Eicher produced.
Bro writes sparse material and leaves the rest to the band. "My compositions are about catching a glimpse of a feeling, sketching it down and then unfolding it as we record", he said at the time. In Haiti Konitz's soprano floats over Cyrille's busy, accented drumming, while the two guitars trade short figures until it is hard to tell them apart. Milford Sound takes its name from a fjord on New Zealand's South Island and nods to Cyrille's duets with Milford Graves. Moran's hushed chords and Morgan's bass lines move in and out of the conversation. The opening Black Is All Colors At Once sets the tone, a slow melody that each player colours in turn.
Critics heard the restraint as the point. In The Guardian, which named it jazz album of the month, the verdict was that "Taking Turns is a little masterpiece". Phil Johnson in UK Jazz News praised "outstandingly beautiful music that can seem to slip by almost invisibly". Several reviewers, Johnson among them, connected Konitz's presence to the cool school of Lennie Tristano, and Peter Jones in Jazzwise stressed how closely the six musicians listen to each other.
LP edition, ECM 2543, issued in March 2025. The album was first released on CD in November 2024.
