A saxophonist who played on On The Corner, spent two years in the Miles Davis band, then walked away from the electric world entirely to pursue a much more austere kind of playing. David Liebman made a run of records for the French Owl label in the eighties that are among the best things he has done, and Trio + One is built on that principle of subtraction: soprano saxophone in a small setting, no chordal padding, long modal explorations and a tone that gets thinner and more concentrated the further out he goes. European label, European sensibility, and a long way from the Miles band.
Original French Owl pressing. Serious, unshowy post-Coltrane soprano playing.
