In an 'ecological' process of recovery and reuse of musical materials and obsolete electronics, 'Unfall' (German for “accident”) lays its research focus on the encounter between improvised music, electroacoustics, free jazz, dixieland, and minimalism, filtered and recomposed through techniques typical of musique concrète. Referencing Burroughs' cut-ups and methods derived from tape music, 'Unfall' experiments with intertextuality, establishing a dialogue between seemingly distant musical languages.
The music contained here was recorded during a series of residencies in Tuscany and Umbria, followed by a complex process of editing and recomposition conducted by Renato Grieco through re-recording and physical manipulation of analog tape and lathe-cut vinyl, modular synthesis, and field recording. Musical structures are only partially defined, placing Unfall in a position to explore the interplay between discipline and play, control and chaos. In the midst of this, the five musicians seek their own flow, building spaces for reflection, meditation, and healing.
