Transversales Disques presents Unreleased & Rarities, a revelatory collection spanning 1972-2002 by electronic music pioneer Jean Schwarz - thirty years of secret compositions from one of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) most dedicated yet overlooked figures. Schwarz occupied a unique position in the world of electroacoustic music, serving simultaneously as an engineer at the CNRS in the Ethnomusicology Department of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris and as a core member of the legendary GRM from 1969 to 1999. This dual role - part scientist, part artist - profoundly shaped his approach to electronic composition, bringing ethnomusicological rigor to experimental sound creation.

Unlike his more celebrated GRM colleagues Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, and Bernard Parmegiani, Schwarz worked largely in the shadows, creating music for dance, screen, and performing arts that rarely found its way to commercial release. This collection represents the first comprehensive survey of his personal archive, unveiling three decades of meticulous sonic craftsmanship. Working within the Musée de l'Homme's ethnomusicology department provided Schwarz with access to field recordings and traditional instruments from around the world. This exposure to diverse musical cultures profoundly influenced his compositional approach, leading him to develop techniques that merged anthropological documentation with avant-garde transformation. His work represents a unique synthesis of academic research and artistic experimentation. The period covered - 1972 to 2002 - traces Schwarz's evolution from early tape manipulation experiments to sophisticated digital compositions. These pieces reveal an artist deeply concerned with the relationship between cultural memory and electronic mediation, often incorporating elements from traditional musics into complex electroacoustic frameworks.

Schwarz's position at the intersection of science and art allowed him to approach electronic composition with unusual methodological rigor. His pieces demonstrate careful attention to spectral analysis, acoustic properties, and the anthropological significance of sound materials - resulting in music that is both intellectually rigorous and emotionally compelling.

Many of these compositions were created for specific dance performances, theatrical productions, and film scores, explaining their rarity in the electroacoustic canon. Freed from these original contexts, they reveal themselves as sophisticated autonomous works that deserve recognition alongside the acknowledged masterpieces of French electronic music.

The collection has been meticulously remastered from original master tapes, preserving the subtle spatial characteristics and dynamic range that distinguish Schwarz's work. Exclusive liner notes provide context for these previously unknown compositions, illuminating the working methods of an artist who preferred substance to publicity.
