Composed in the Celia records studio, December 1993, and January 1994. Commissioned by INA grm. As per Jean Schwarz's own words “At the very beginning, there was rhythm”... Rhythm never stopped to be among the heart of all kinds of musical forms, such as traditional, non-european, jazz, occidental, experimental and electroacoustic styles. Each machine produces its own rhythm. The purpose of the piece is to orchestrate and play with rhythms of different machines as varied as possible in order to reach a polyphonic pattern. Our musical culture being fairly spread out, the surprises produced by the unheard nature of sounds are overtaken and assimilated as well by composers as by listeners.

Sampling, the use of Midi sequences driving the studio “machines”, the help of the GRM Tools software settled the basic work. One will have guessed that “Makinak” means machines in the basque language. Composed in the Celia records studio, fall 1994. Commissioned by INA grm.

The idea of writing for several parts in the electroacoustic practice is an old dream which the actual technology allows us to come close to. Result : 5 movements. Consequently the austerity of this first polyphonic part urged me to add another more fluent part. Two bounded movements figure in this second part: first a rhythmic ostinato which gradually accelerates, then a long sustained texture on a single note with several materials.
