Paul Panhuysen (1934 to 2015) was a Dutch composer and visual and sound artist. In Eindhoven he founded and directed Het Apollohuis, one of the most important European spaces for sound installation, sound sculpture and concerts of free improvisation, experimental and electronic music through the 1980s and 1990s, a meeting point for artists from all over the world. His best known works are the Long String Installations, in which long wires cross a space in different patterns and are set ringing by fingers coated in rosin, drawn along them like a bow.
One of the best magazines of experimental music / sound art, founded by John Oswald and published since 1978. Includes feaurures, essays, interviews, reviews, etc., and comes with a CD with (often exclusive) music/sound in relation to the contents of the magazine. In this issue: Felix Hess, Peter Cusack, Douglas Quin, Paul Panhuysen, Stan Brakhage, John Cage, etc.

1992 release (RARE - light storage wear) ** All of these Apollo albums have a tendency towards the odd, but this is one of the more eccentric. During 1990 and 1991, Paul Panhuysen "collaborated" with a group of canaries, keeping them in his studio, and featuring them as part of his exhibitions. He experimented with different ways of recording the sounds they made, attaching contact microphones to their cages and exploring the use of different types of effects processing. More intriguingly, he ex…

"Carillon Sudokus" is the sonic counterpart to "Oog & Oor" (Eye & Ear), the last work that Dutch sound and visual artist Paul Panhuysen (1934–2015) realized. Oog & Oor was a design made with his daughter Sappho Panhuysen for a temporary installation in the lighted column of the Rietveld bus shelter next to the town hall of Eindhoven. It is a further development from "Eight Double Sudokus", a series of large-scale prints exhibited at Museum De Pont in Tilburg in 2012. Both designs were created us…
Restocked. "Two aspects were of central interest to him: different tunings and density of sound. He made an installation in the large space of Het Apollohuis, stretching four strings lengthwise and attaching them to the wooden wall on the far end, which served as a resonator. He did not use automatons or electric amplification. He played the strings by brushing them, walking back and forth at an even pace. His aim was to make his playing as continuous and even as possible. For each partita he re…

This Paul Panhuysen work is a composition in two parts. The same magic square is transposed in two versions. One can be experienced by the eyes, the other one by the ears. Both parts are produced from the numbers of the same magic square of 5. A magic square is a series of numbers arranged in a square grid so that the sum of each horizontal and vertical row and of the corner diagonals is always the same.Magic squares reveal harmony of number and refer to the nature of existence and a cosmic orde…
Packaged in a Digipak with a 12-panel insert. Following a trip to Mexico City, Paul Panhuysen returned to Eindhoven with 200 jumping beans - those curious larvae-inhabited seed pods sold as toys in local markets. At Het Apollohuis, he began a series of experiments that would result in this remarkable recording. Panhuysen's practice has long incorporated living creatures alongside electronic devices: "I've worked often with animals, with birds, crickets and goats. I also use sensors, timers, sole…
