"I started Blink in the summer of 2024, aiming to create a band sound where collective improvisations and responses take precedence over individual solos. The compositions are inspired by group behavioral patterns such as insect swarms and bird flocks, with their organic swells in dynamics and density. Gabe and Nate’s instruments are tuned a quarter tone sharp, giving the band a distinctive, off-balance feel – one inspired by classic African High Life bands, Indonesian Gamelan ensembles, and Delta Blues guitar players. We use micro-tonality as a way to “dirty up” our sound, inviting unexpected frequencies to improvise with and throwing off listeners' sense of balance.
The rhythmic ideas are similarly off-kilter; for “Stretch” I imagine strumming guitar chords and drums as balls attached to rubber bands, bouncing at independent tempos. “Rub” employs sets of intervals looped in organic, multi-tempo cycles. “Pulse” is inspired by African guitar and balafon music, with loops that are flexible in length forming a springboard for improvisational variations. “Yet” is a fragile, canonic melody that leads into the minimalist rock “Hop.” “Trans” was originally composed as a dense 15-minute composition for the 24-piece David Kweksilber Big Band, featuring myself on Lyricon. The core members of Blink have worked together for more than a decade in Boston groups such as Cutout, The Porch Trio, and Bolt. Gabe is a newcomer to the Boston scene, bringing youthful energy and a love for free music and alternative guitar sounds. I decided to focus on the alto sax, after decades of explorations with the Lyricon, electronics, and soprano sax." – Jorrit Dijkstra
