White vinyl Limited Edition to 300 numbered copies When two musicians of this caliber come together, expectations run high - and Double Consciousness not only meets them but transcends them entirely. Oren Ambarchi, the Australian guitar alchemist whose work has redefined what the instrument can do and mean, joins forces with Belgian drummer Eric Thielemans, a player whose sensitivity and restraint have made him one of the most sought-after collaborators in European improvised music. The title itself suggests the philosophical territory this music inhabits - that state of perceiving oneself through multiple lenses simultaneously, of being at once inside and outside the moment. Ambarchi has spent decades stripping the guitar of its conventional associations, transforming it into a source of pure tone and texture that owes as much to Éliane Radigue and Alvin Lucier as to any rock or jazz tradition. His collaborations read like a who's who of contemporary experimental music - Jim O'Rourke, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Sunn O))) - yet each project finds him pushing into new territory.
Thielemans, for his part, brings a jazz musician's deep understanding of time and space, knowing precisely when to enter and when to hold back, when to drive and when to float. Together they create a music of extraordinary patience and depth, long tones and subtle pulses building into something hypnotic and immersive. Double Consciousness is a masterclass in collaborative improvisation, two distinct musical personalities merging into something greater than either could achieve alone. The ultra-clear vinyl pressing allows this music to breathe with all the clarity and detail it deserves.
