The album marks a pivotal moment for the band, cementing their signature blend of punk blues, rock and roll, garage, and rockabilly influences. Recorded between July and December 1992 in Memphis and New York, the record showcases Jon Spencer’s raw vocals and guitar, Judah Bauer’s gritty guitar work, and Russell Simins’ dynamic drumming. "Extra Width" is characterized by its energetic riffs, fuzzed-out grooves, and a wild, unrestrained sound that would become a hallmark of the band’s style. The album includes tracks like "Afro," "History of Lies," and "Soul Letter," and was later reissued with bonus tracks from the companion album "Mo' Width".
