Drissi El-Abbassi returns with Rai Sidi Bel Abbes – Volume 2, a compelling collection that delves deeper into the evolution of Raï music from the late 1970s through the 1990s. This compilation, released by Nashazphone, showcases El-Abbassi's unique approach to Raï, characterized by his soft vocal delivery and innovative integration of traditional and modern musical elements.
Born in Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria, El-Abbassi began his musical journey in 1978 at the age of 17, joining the group Les Aigles Noirs as a stage animator. His collaboration with the legendary guitarist Ahmed Zergui led to his first solo cassette in 1979, featuring the track "Jat Jat," which gained widespread recognition after being covered by Cheb Khaled. Following Zergui's passing in 1983, El-Abbassi formed his own group, embracing new technologies such as synthesizers and drum machines to further develop the Raï genre. Volume 2 presents eight tracks that highlight El-Abbassi's musical versatility and his ability to blend microtonal synth leads, wah-wah guitar riffs, and rhythmic drum machine patterns. Songs like "Maak Probleme," "Ala Jal Ouahda," and "Datli Laakal" exemplify his skill in merging traditional Arabic musical modes with contemporary electronic sounds, creating a soundscape that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
Mastered by Mark Gergis, this release offers listeners a rare glimpse into the formative years of Raï music, capturing the essence of a genre that has since gained international acclaim.
