Pekka Airaksinen’s Love’N Addiction, composed in 1978 and released over a decade later under the alias McDullan, is a daring sonic exploration of sex and drugs-intentionally leaving out rock’n’roll, despite the title’s playful hint. The album’s soundscape is cold, mechanical, and at times abrasive, conjuring the sensation of two dinosaur computers conversing or Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley on a bad acid trip. Closely related to Airaksinen’s Vitamins in both era and approach, Love’N Addiction stands as one of his most experimental works, blurring the boundaries between electronic abstraction and emotional narrative.

The album contrasts the hyperactive, icy textures of its “drug” tracks-like the frenetic “Good News From Columbia”-with the three “sex” compositions, all titled “Eros.” These “Eros” pieces introduce a surprising warmth, featuring saxophone and, in the first, a hypnotic drone that gives the track an off-kilter, immersive vibe. Throughout his forty-year career, Airaksinen has consistently been ahead of his time, from his controversial days with The Sperm to his ongoing series of albums inspired by Buddhist mythology. Love’N Addiction is a testament to his fearless creativity, offering a unique window into the mind of one of Finland’s most prolific and visionary experimental artists.
