Edition of 30 (!) Eight pieces by the graduating artists of the Nordic Sound Art programme, issued in 2015 by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in an edition of 300, compiled by Jonas Olesen, who coordinated the programme throughout its life, and supported by the KUNO Publication Fund.

Nordic Sound Art ran from 2007 to 2015 as a joint study programme within the KUNO network, shared between the art academies of Copenhagen, Helsinki, Bergen, Tromsø and Umeå. Students spent a year moving between the five schools for intensive one and two-week modules. Over the 2012-2014 cycle that meant field recording with hydrophones, drawn sound on 35mm film, the acoustics of a disused water tower in Helsinki, site-specific work with John Grzinich in Bergen, sound and the moving image with Alex Reynolds in Umeå. The stated aim was to give artists coming out of a visual arts training the means to use the sonic dimension independently and critically, rather than as decoration. The programme closed after the 2015 graduate show at Gallery Augusta, Helsinki.

The record gathers eight compositions drawn from installation work made in that context. Jonas Gazell's Premonition Peak opens with sparse click and cut activity over low hums, followed by Troels Nøhr Holmstrøm's Stålbro, Michael 'Stoffer' Christensen's 3 Objects, whose installation form involved plain geometric panels and a coffee maker, and Hannah Anbert's Invitation. The second side carries Georgia Rodger's Thought-Forms, a headphone piece built around extended dialogue, then Tuukka Haapakorpi's A Mouth Piece, Tuukka Salonen's Liquid Man and Helene Førde's Temporale 1,2,3, made from everyday objects and closely tied to outdoor space. Each piece runs to roughly four minutes, which gives the set an unusual density for documentation of this kind: field recording, object improvisation, voice and electroacoustic composition compressed into short forms rather than left to unfold at installation length. Førde won the Sonotopia prize in Bonn the same year.

Reviewing it for Neural in January 2016, Aurelio Cianciotta noted the amount of serious work packed into the release and singled out both its conceptual and practical results.

Please note: this is the LP on its own. The original edition came housed in a grey cardboard folder with eleven prints, an introduction by Olesen and essays by Imri Sandström and Brandon LaBelle, and these copies do not include the folder or its contents. Long out of print.
